Chevrolet India says faulty Takata airbags replace 12,000 cruise units

The automaker Chevrolet India said on April 13 that it had replaced faulty Takata airbags in about 12,000 cruise units in the country, while appealing to remaining customers to inspect their vehicles as soon as possible.

The company, part of US auto major General Motors, is inspecting and replacing faulty airbags in cruise sedan units manufactured between 2009 and 2017.

The exercise is part of the Takata airbag recall announced on February 25, 2019. Millions of vehicles have been recalled globally due to faulty safety airbags manufactured by Takata Corp. of Japan.

General Motors exited the Indian market in 2018 and now caters only to the aftersales needs of existing customers.

“While our after-sales teams at Chevrolet have contacted and completed the necessary inspections and replacements in more than 12,000 vehicles affected by this recall in previous months, there are still very few customers who have the opportunity to get their vehicles Would not have been found. Inspected, “Chevrolet India vice president of commercial operations Marcus Sternberg said in a statement.

He said that Chevrolet is appealing to all customers to get their vehicle inspected as soon as possible to ensure their safe motoring.

The company continues to maintain a strong network of Chevrolet authorized service operations with an all-India presence in 134 cities, and more than 160 service workshops to take care of its customers.

In 2015, General Motors announced an investment of $ 1 billion in India to ramp up manufacturing operations and roll out locally produced models in the country over the next five years.

In January 2018, the Detroit-based firm placed its investment in new models for the country as it made a full review of its future product portfolio in India.

On May 18, 2018, General Motors suddenly decided to stop the sale of its vehicles in India.

The company has now stopped exporting vehicles from its manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra.

GM India used to sell models like Beat, Sale and Cruise in the country.
