Charge sheet filed in espionage case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), while investigating the espionage racket based in Visakhapatnam, filed a supplementary charge sheet on Friday against the textile trader Yakub Imran Gitelli alias Gitelli Imran in the NIA special court in Vijayawada.

Yakub Imran, a resident of Panchmahal, Godhra, Gujarat, was allegedly in touch with Pakistani ISI agents and mediated with naval personnel who were allegedly involved in the case, according to the chargesheet filed by the agency.

It was alleged that the accused often visited Pakistan on the pretext of textile business. He allegedly transferred money to Navy personnel accounts for leaking highly sensitive and strategic information.

In November 2019, the Intelligence Department’s Counter Intelligence Police busted a spy racket based in Visakhapatnam, which allegedly involved some young sailors of the Indian Navy.

The NIA handled the case, with the case of spying being linked to the Mumbai naval base, Karwar naval base and Visakhapatnam navies. The agency filed a charge sheet against 14 persons, including some sailors and civilians.

During the investigation, it was revealed that active ISI operative Yakub Imran was in contact with Pakistani agents and raised funds for terrorist groups and their activities.

Sailors, recruited in 2017, were stranded in honey in September 2018. They reportedly revealed locations that provided important submarines, names of top-level officials and other sensitive information. A high-level source said that they were paid through hawala operators.

Police arrested a Jabbar in the first case, along with sailors and investigations are on.
