The district administration and fisheries department jointly launched a special campaign to ensure 100% turnout by involving fishermen on Monday.
Inaugurating the campaign, District Election Officer and Collector Dinesh Ponraj Oliver said that the objective was to ensure that all eligible voters exercise their franchise in the Assembly elections on 6 April.
Advancing efforts by the Election Commission of India to popularize and sensitize the voters, the fishermen volunteered to stage their boats and stage a grand demonstration on the sea.
Seeing the boats joining the expedition from the road bridge, Mr. Dinesh Ponraj Oliver and his team of officials distributed pamphlets to the people and tourists visiting the district. Officials said the day-long campaign was meant to educate people on the importance of casting votes.
A total of 280 TNSTC buses and 120 private buses and autorickshaws going to various destinations from here were prominently displayed with stickers.
