Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels said his club is facing “catastrophe” after the 2–1 Bundesliga defeat. A late winner from Portuguese striker Andre Silva means Dortmund are Frankfurt’s seven points and Champions League qualifying places with just seven games to go. “In fact, it is very difficult to finish in the top four, even if we have more than six or seven wins,” Hummels said after stopping Sky from their 10th defeat of the season.
He said that missing the top four would be disastrous for Dortmund, who face a battle to capture iconic key players such as Erling Brut Holland and Jadon Sancho in the next transfer window.
“Not being eligible for the Champions League will obviously be a game and financial catastrophe, and we’re close to that now,” Hummels said.
Frankfurt took the lead with their own goal at the interval of 11 minutes, as Nico Schulze sent a looping header into his own net following a cross from Philippe Kistic.
Kevin Trapp denied Halemand with a smart save ten minutes later, before Hummels slammed the ball into a corner to level the score at the stroke of half-time.
Stephen Ilsanker of Frankfurt scored a goal just after the hour mark, but the guest restored the lead on a counter-attack in the dying minutes, with Silva scoring close after another caustic cross.
