Taken to hospital in Kochi via green corridor set up by police
The heart of a brain patient from Thiruvananthapuram was flown to Kochi by helicopter on Thursday evening, which was transplanted here to an 18-year-old patient.
The recipient of the heart suffered from cardiomyopathy, and transplant surgery was successful at Liese Hospital, and the heart stopped beating without external help. The team that performed the surgery was headed by Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon.
A spokesperson for the hospital said the 18-year-old Kayakulam resident, who was undergoing treatment at an out-of-state hospital, had recently arrived at Lisi Hospital for treatment. The spokesperson said that the patient was immediately registered for transplant and did not suffer after a long wait.
Danveer, a 25-year-old native of Kanyakumari, was injured in an accident and was declared brain-dead at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday evening. Lisi Hospital was informed through the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) about the announcement and the possibility of transplant. A four-member team left for the capital from Kochi at 10 am on Thursday and the process of harvesting the heart began around 3 pm
This is the third time in nearly a year that a helicopter hired by the state government is being used to deliver a harvested organ for transplant. It was replayed once in May and again in July last year.
The helicopter landed at the Hotel Grand Hyatt Helipad in Bolgatti at 6.15 pm and the severed heart from the green corridor set up by the police was taken to the hospital. The ambulance, for which a separate track and police escort was arranged on the road, arrived at the hospital in just 3.5 minutes, said Commissioner of Police K Lalji.
