The demand to award Bharat Ratna to Field Marshal Kariyappa and General Thimayya, both from Kodagu district, is long pending before the Center. Even former Army Chief Bipin Rawat supported the demand to award Bharat Ratna to Field Marshal Kariappa. While Cariappa was the first Indian commander of the Indian Army, General Thimyya served as the Chief of Army Staff from 1957 to 1961.

While Mr. Kovind went to Madikeri to inaugurate the General Thimyya Memorial Museum last month, Ms. Achaiah submitted a memorandum stating that General Thimayya was the only Indian to command an infantry contingent in combat during World War II, while Belonged to Mr. Cariappa.
