If former CM Mahanta refused to give ticket, Congress-led coalition may break
The inclusion of former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahant in the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) list of candidates has led to the revival of a faction, the AGP-Progressive (AGP-P), which may join the Congress leadership. Mahajot Or the Grand Alliance in polluted Assam.
Mr. Mahant has contested the Berhampur Assembly Constituency in Central Assam since 1991. But his name did not figure among AGP candidates after a seat-sharing agreement with key partner BJP in New Delhi on Thursday.
The former chief minister, who was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi till Thursday, has not joined the revived AGP-P. But his loyalists are hopeful that he will “take the right decision” after his return to Assam and “beef-BJP” reply to the AGP.
BJP enters Assam by holding Mahant’s hand Dangoria (Equivalent to honorable) Yes In Assamese) because former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee requested him. But the BJP betrayed him and cut its wings after coming to power as he has been firm against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, ”AGP-P general secretary Pranab Goswami said on Friday.
He said the AGP-P had been inactive for several years, until the anti-CAA movement brought together former AGP activists, deciding to contest the upcoming assembly elections on 3 March.
Barely two months after AGP, Mr. Mahant formed AGP-P, which he was the founder-president of, in September 2005, expelled him. However, the party merged with AGP in October 2008.
He said, ‘We wrote to all the opposing CAA parties to unite and contest the election. All except Assam Janata Parishad responded. We are negotiating with the Congress and if the work happens and they give us part of their seats, then we will join Mahajot Or go it alone, ”Mr. Goswami said.
He said that people against the CAA want the AGP-P to contest most seats, but “we want to focus on 15 seats because we are not so organized at the moment”.
Mr. Goswami said that he expected Mr. Mahant to contest on the AGP-P ticket. “He is still with the AGP, many of us have left. We want him to take a decision for Assam and there is a need to form a CA-CA government, ”he said.
