Apple Music Lossless audio now available in India: What you need to know - Times of India

The much-anticipated Spatial Audio and Lossless music features are now available in India. Apple rolled out iOS 14.7 update last night and with it users get two new features. Apple Music will have 75 million songs in lossless audio quality. Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos is also now available on Apple Music.
What is Lossless Audio?
The audio files that manage to keep the original data when a particular song was composed are called Lossless music files. A lot of the songs when compressed lose the ‘originality’ — something that Lossless audio files preserve. Apple uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) to preserve every single bit of the original audio file. This means fans will be able to hear their favourite songs exactly the way the artists created them in the studio
Do you need extra data for Lossless?
Yes, you would as lossless music files eat up a lot more data when music is being streamed. Also, keep in mind that these files consume a lot more space on your device as well. Apple Music’s Lossless tier starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz (kilohertz), and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz and is playable natively on Apple devices. For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless all the way up to 24 bit at 192 kHz.
What devices do you need for Lossless?
You can listen to Lossless on iPhone, iPad. However, you will need wired headphones or speakers with it. Or simply listen to it on the built-in speakers. AirPods, unfortunately, don’t support Lossless.
Do you need to pay anything extra for Lossless?
No, there is no extra cost for Lossless audio files in Apple Music.
Will it work on Android devices?
Yes, Lossless on Apple Music will work on Android phones as well. It will be rolled out soon.
How to get Lossless Audio?
To start listening to Lossless Audio, subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music can turn it on in Settings > Music > Audio Quality. Here, they can choose different resolutions for different connections such as cellular, Wi-Fi, or for download.
Apple Music is working closely with artists and labels to add new releases and the best catalog tracks, as more artists begin to create music specifically for the Spatial Audio experience.
