Antilia scare: Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze suspended

The Mumbai Police on Monday suspended Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze following his arrest by the NIA in connection with the recovery of explosives from a car near the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, an official said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Chaitanya told reporters that “API Sachin Vej has been suspended under an order of the Additional Commissioner of Police Police Branch”.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Waze on Saturday on 25 February in connection with the seizure of a Scorpio containing 20 gelatin sticks near ‘Antilia’, Ambani’s home in South Mumbai.

Waze (49) is also credited with eliminating 63 alleged criminals in the encounters’ case of the murder of Thane-based businessman Mansukh Hiran, who was in possession of Scorpio. Deer was found dead on 5 March in a rivulet in Thane district.

A Mumbai court on Sunday expelled Vaz in NIA custody till 25 March.

Waze was arrested under sections 286 of IPC (careless conduct in relation to explosive substance) 465 (forgery), 473 (making or possessing a fake seal with intent to commit forgery), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation), 120 -B (criminal conspiracy)) and the relevant provisions of the Explosive Substances Act, a police officer said earlier.

In its remand petition, the NIA recorded the statements of witnesses to ascertain Wazi’s involvement in the case.

Vege, a 1990 batch officer of the state cadre, was earlier suspended in 2004 in the case of death in custody of Khwaja Younus, a suspect in the 2002 Ghatkopar blast and was reinstated last year.
