Annu Rani improved her own javelin throw national record but still missed the Tokyo Olympic qualification mark by more than half a meter on the opening day of the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships on Monday. Rani won the gold medal with a best throw of 63.24 meters, the first national mark of 62.43 meters in her third attempt, which she recorded during the World Championships in Doha in 2019.

The Tokyo Olympic qualification mark for women’s javelin throw is 64 meters.
The 28-year-old, who won bronze at the 2014 Asian Games and silver at the Asian Championships in 2019, was representing Uttar Pradesh in the national competition.
Rajasthan’s Sanjana Chaudhary finished second with a best throw of 54.55 meters while Kumari Sharmila of Haryana finished third in the eight-athlete field with a best effort of 50.78 meters.
