Andy Dalton says Beers promised him one thing before signing

Byers offered Andy Dalton an offer he could not refuse.

At his introductory news conference, the elderly quarterback became more than usual: his work ethic, his personality, a chance again, all the requisite baggage. But before penning with Chicago, Dalton said the team had promised him one thing: a chance to start again.

“They told me I was a starter,” said Dalton (Via ESPN) Belongs to. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to come here. So every conversation I had, so that I liked the assurance that I got.”

Dalton doesn’t really have a ton of competition in the Byers QB room to solidify that position as a starter. The current rostered quarterbacks are Dalton and Nick Foles, who were fairly mediocre in 2020.

Dalton spent the 2020 season with the Cowboys, spending his season being involved in action as a Dallas starter following the Duck Proctor’s ankle injury. Dalton played 11 games, including nine starts, 2,170 yards rushing, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions in a very top-down season. He missed time even after committing a ruckus.

Dalton’s signature with Dalton was deemed a one-year deal to rebuild his value and resume work down the road. It seems to have worked for him.

Byers offered Seahawk a godfather to Russell Wilson, but business negotiations broke down, leading to Dalton’s signature.

Apparently, in the NFL, things change at the snap of a ball, so Dalton’s standing as a starter only matters as much as he does (or doesn’t) beer between the start of the 2021 season and now.
