Officials said Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga held a meeting with Myanmar Foreign Minister Xin Mar Aung on Sunday about the current political situation and the difficulties being faced by the Zoe ethnic people in the neighboring country.

Speaking at the virtual meeting, which was also attended by US-based Mizo leaders, Zoramthanga expressed solidarity with the people of Myanmar.

The Chief Minister tweeted, “A meaningful meeting (online) took place this morning with Xin Mar Aung, Honorable Foreign Minister, Myanmar. Our thoughts and prayers are with Myanmar during these efforts.”

He said, “It is our prayer that your sufferings and mental sufferings will die soon.”

An official from the Chief Minister’s Office said the two leaders discussed the current political situation in Myanmar amid a coup in February.

He said the meeting was said to expand solidarity and peace among the Zo ethnic people of Myanmar, who have been victims of “persecution and atrocities” since the military junta came to power in the neighboring country.

Atrocities with more than 500 people from the neighboring country have crossed Mizoram in the last few weeks, with the Center even directing four Myanmar-northeastern states to stop illegal immigration and ensure speedy deportation.

Mizoram has a 510 km long unfit and porous international border with Myanmar.

On March 18, Zoramthanga wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking asylum and relief for Myanmar citizens seeking refuge in the country.

The Chief Minister said that India cannot turn its back on humanitarian crisis.

Most areas that share a border with Mizoram in Myanmar are inhabited by Chin communities who share the same ancestry and ethnicity as the Mizos, rejecting the Union Interior Ministry’s advice “not acceptable” to prevent illegal flooding done.

Officials said that the majority of people from Myanmar who seek refuge in Mizoram belong to the Chin community and are being given relief and asylum by local NGOs.

The state’s top student body Mizo Zirlai Paval (MZP) on Saturday, along with four other organizations, organized charity concerts to raise money for refugees from Myanmar in various parts of Aizawl.

More than Z 5.19 lakh was raised through the program, MZP general secretary Lalanmumavia Putu told PTI.
