Delhi Police said on March 12, “Tihar Jail authorities have seized a mobile phone which is suspected to have been used to operate the telegram channel responsible for terrorist activities / threats.”
“Based on the information provided by the special cell, Tihar Jail authorities have seized a mobile phone from a jail where some terrorist offenses have been registered. It is suspected that this phone has recently been used to operate telegram channels used to claim responsibility for terrorist activities / threats, ”said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwaha.
The official said that further investigation and forensic analysis will be done after getting the details of the mobile handset and seizure from Tihar Jail authorities.
A senior Mumbai Police official said that Mumbai Police enlisted the help of a private cyber agency to track the location of the phone. During the investigation, the location of the phone was found near Tihar Jail in Delhi.
On February 25, a Mahindra Scorpio SUV containing gelatin sticks was found near Antilia, Mr Ambani’s multi-storey residence in South Mumbai.
According to police sources, the Telegram channel was created on 26 February and the message was posted on the Telegram messaging app late on 27 February, claiming the responsibility of keeping the vehicle outside Mr Ambani’s residence. The message also called for payment in cryptocurrency and mentioned a link to deposit the same.
During the investigation, the link was found to be “not available”, leading investigators to suspect it to be mischievous, the official said.
On 28 February, another message from Jaish-ul-Hind surfaced on the social media platform, claiming that the organization had no role in the incident.
The case was initially investigated by the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police.
After the mysterious death of Thane-based auto parts dealer Mansukh Hiran, who was in possession of the SUV, which was later parked outside Mr Ambani’s residence, the investigation was transferred to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
On 8 March, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) handled the case related to the recovery of an explosive-laden vehicle.
