Second seed Alexander Zverev defeated top seed Stephanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) on Saturday and won the ATP hardcourt tournament in Acapulco, Mexico. Germany’s Zverev, ranked seventh in the world, lost their last five matches against world number five from Greece. In the opening times it seemed that Zverev might be headed for another defeat as he trailed his first service game 4–1 in the opening set. But he made the move to save three break points in the sixth game, serving him to launch a run of five straight games that saw him pocketed on set.
A second second set saw Zverev take the first break for a 5-4 lead and a chance for the match.
Zetsev saved WhatsApp on the way to save the match once in one of its eight double faults in the competition – when it was double-faulted at break point.
From there it was a fierce battle for the tiebreaker, with Tsitsipas saving six break points for a 6-5 lead and Zverev saving a set point en route to making it 6-6.
Zarev converted his third match point for the better by sealing the win and finishing runner-up to Australian Nick Kyrgios at Acapulco in 2019.
“This win means a lot to me,” said Zverev
He claimed his 14th ATP title and his first match of 2021 and will be one of the men to beat when the Miami Masters start next week in the absence of stars Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem.
