After Apple and Samsung, Google ditches the charger from its smartphones - Times of India

NEW DELHI: After Apple and Samsung, Google is the latest company to do away with the in-box charger. Earlier, this month Google dropped a teaser for its upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. Google confirmed that both the smartphones will be powered by its own custom made chipset and will launch this fall. Now, the company has revealed that both the upcoming smartphones will ship without a charger in the box.
Confirming to The Verge, Google said, “most people already have a USB-C charging brick, so there’s no longer a need to include one with its phones.” Prior to Google, Apple and Samsung both have done the same arrangements. Apple shipped its iPhone 12 series without a charger in the box and Samsung did the same with the Galaxy S21 series.
Both Apple and Samsung claim that it’s an environmentally friendly decision as it will reduce the e-waste. However, we really can’t ignore the direct cost savings for the brands.
Apart from Apple and Samsung, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi also started removing chargers from the box starting with the Mi 11 series.
Recently, Google launched its mid-range Pixel 5a smartphone in the US and Japan. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor and it comes with Titan M security module for on-device security. The device packs 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage. It runs Android 11 operating system and the users are guaranteed to get at least three years of software upgrades.
