Adani Welspun JV discovers gas in Mumbai offshore basin

Spread over 714.6 sq km, the block is situated in the vast gas-prone Tapti-Daman region.

Adani Welspun Exploration Limited (AWEL), a joint venture of Adani Group and Welspun Enterprises Limited, has announced its first gas discovery in the MB-OSN-2005/2, NELP-VII block located in the Mumbai offshore basin.

AWEL has a 100% Participation Interest (PI) and is the operator of this block. Spread over 714.6 sq km, the block is located in the massive gas-prone Tapti-Daman sector of the Mumbai offshore basin.

“The face of payment sector and flow rate has exceeded the company’s initial projections. This information is of considerable importance to both the company and the nation, along with the information received from the surrounding areas / regions, ”AWEL said in a statement.

AWEL was awarded the block under the new Exploration Licensing Policy VII bid round.

“Initial indications point to the occurrence of gas-bearing reservoirs within the sandstone reservoirs of the Mahuva and Daman formations,” the company said.

Drilling of the current well in March 2021 confirmed the presence of a substantial amount of gas and condensed into the block.

“Out of the three potential areas identified during drilling, two items tested by Drill Stem Testing (DST) flowed enough gas and condensed to the surface. Object-I (3 m), a clean sandstone reservoir, flowed 9.78 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmscfd), along with a condensate day of 378 barrels / 28 hours at tubing head pressure (FTHP). Choked 2659 sai, ”it said.

“Object-II (15 m), another thick clean sandstone reservoir, flows through 9.13 mmscfd gas as well as a 28/64 through 443 barrels / day of condensate” choke at FTPP of 2566 psi, “this said.

“Apart from being a value adder for the company, the discovery could be a significant breakthrough for our country, which has focused on India nearly tripling the share of natural gas in its energy mix by the end of this decade,” Sandeep Garg, MD, AWEL, said.

“The company is also an operator in this massive gas-bearing area with 100% PI of the adjacent small field B-9 cluster discovered. The proximity of these two potential blocks will enable AWEL to coordinate and optimize the development of both blocks, ”he said.
