Madurai
For the last two weeks, there has been a steady increase in the number of active cases of COVID-19 registered in Madurai district. Active cases reached 105 on Friday, crossing the 100-case mark after several weeks.
Doctors and health department officials believe that the public should strictly follow COVID-19 safety precautions to prevent a second wave of COVID-19 cases in the district.
Dean of Government Rajaji Hospital J. Sangumani said that around 70 patients were undergoing treatment at the hospital on Friday.
Deputy Director of Health Services KV Arjun Kumar said that no cluster was formed in Madurai. The increase in positive cases is all indigenous cases from the city. Most of the cases come from the Madurai Corporation border. “A large number of residents over 50 years of age are positive for COVID-19,” he said.
Officials point out that there is a poor compliance with the use of facemasks and maintaining personal distances in public places.
President of Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association. Senthil said that safety precautions and COVID-19 vaccination should continue simultaneously.
He said that it would take more than a year until COVID-19 vaccination was done in a large proportion of the population.
“It is important to understand that both vaccines – covishield and covaxin – do not have 100% efficacy. Therefore, it is important to follow safety precautions even after vaccination. Even if beneficiaries do not test positive for COVID-19. ” They can become carriers of the virus, ”he said.
