Accident victim’s organs were transplanted – Hindu

The organs of the 28-year-old man, who was declared brain dead at a private hospital in the city, were retrieved on Wednesday and transplanted into registered recipients with life worthwhile.

Youth – Chandan Mallappa was brought to Apollo BGS Hospital in Mysuru on Sunday afternoon at 12.20 pm after a road accident. “Early CT scans showed brain stem infarcts. A hospital statement said that he was shifted to the ICU at 2.20 pm for life and intensive care.

Chandan was placed on lifelong assistance for two days while he was in a very critical condition. According to the Transplant of Human Organs Act, 1994, he was declared brain dead on the third day due to brain stem failure by a panel of doctors as per the hospital protocol.

Chandan was healthy prior to the incident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. A statement said attendees were counseled for organ donation as per defined protocol and their mother, brother-in-law and relatives came forward to donate sandalwood organs.

According to the organ donation protocol, the officials of Jeeva Sarkathe, formerly known as ZCCK or Regional Coordination Committee of Karnataka for organ transplantation, started the process according to the waiting list of organ recipients, the statement from Apollo BGS Hospitals said Gaya, Mysuru, is a licensed center for multigirl transplant.

At around 2.30 pm on Wednesday, the sandalwood organs (heart valves, two kidneys, liver and pancreas) were recovered at the hospital. The recipients underwent simultaneous transplantation of kidneys, pancreas and liver, who had registered with the organism Sarthakatha and were awaiting organs.

While kidney, pancreas and liver were transplanted in the same hospital, one kidney was sent to Manipal Hospital in Bangalore and heart valves were sent to Jaydev Hospital in Bangalore.

The hospital staff made a human chain in the hospital premises to pay their last respects to Chandan and his family, a statement issued by NG Bharatesh Reddy, Vice President and Unit Head, Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysuru, said.
