Approximately 146 tonnes of bio-medical waste is generated per day in the country due to clinical activities and treatment of COVID-19 patients, the Ministry of Environment informed Parliament on Monday.
In response to a question in the Upper House of Parliament, Minister of State for the Environment Babul Supriyo said that according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, about 146 tonnes of incremental BMW is generated per day in the country due to the diagnostic. He said that according to CPCB, about 616 tonnes per day of Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) was generated in the country during 2019.
In response to a question on the actions being taken for disposal of waste, the Minister said that to ensure safe disposal of biomedical waste including COVID-19 wastes, CPCB has dealt with the waste generated during treatment, treatment and disposal Has brought out dedicated guidelines for the diagnosis and quarantine of COVID-19 patients.
“As per the provisions of Bio Medical Waste Management (BMWM) Rules, 2016, the State Government (S) / UT Administration is required to ensure that adequate infrastructure exists for treatment and disposal of BMWs within their jurisdiction.
“Accordingly, the State Pollution Control Boards and Pollution Control Committees (SPCBs / PCCs) have authorized 202 Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal Facilities (CBWTFs) to collect and dispose of BMW including COVID-19 waste. In addition, there are approximately 18,178 captive disposal facilities set up by individual HCFs for pre-treatment and / or final treatment of BMWs, ”he told the Rajya Sabha.
