After the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) were found to be clinging to the selection process, a clear picture on the candidates is yet to emerge in the Vadkara constituency of Kozhikode district.
Right now, only the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has announced its candidate. Democratic District President Maninath Chandran will contest the election. He lost to Janata Dal (Secular )’s CK Nanu in 2016, while he was a Janata Dal (United) candidate, who was part of the UDF.
Meanwhile, it is unclear whether the Congress will field its candidate or tie up with the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP). The UDF had aligned with the RMP for local body elections and captured power in some panchayats, upsetting LDF calculations. UDF candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The RMP votes were also important in Muralitharan’s victory. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Congress faction led by Mr. Muralitharan want RMP leader KK Rema to contest from Vadkara, so that the front can bring the debate against political violence back to the CPI-M investigation. However, RMP is unsure about this.
Initially, Ms. Rema herself appeared in the media stating that she would not contest the election, and it was reported that the party’s state secretary N. Venu will throw a hat in the ring. Later, RMP had to revisit Shri Venu’s candidature. But a final decision is awaited.
Discussion is going on in the NDA also regarding the candidate.
