Lewis Hamilton said that Mercedes would be challenged to change the Formula One rule designed to “peg back to us” after being beaten by Max Verstappen at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday. This time the seven-time champion bidding for the unprecedented eighth drivers’ title said it was “no secret” that revised aerodynamic rules were introduced to hold back Mercedes. “I mean it’s no secret that the change has been made to come back to us, of course,” he told reporters on Saturday.
“We had changes, last year – for our engines – to do the same thing.
“But it’s okay. We love a challenge and we don’t pay attention to these things. We just work hard to do the best we can and that’s what we will do.”
His teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was third on Saturday, said he had no answers to give on the same topic.
“I like the Hawaiian stuff,” he said. “I’m a bit of a geek in some ways. I love aerodynamics, I’m really interested, but I don’t know the facts.”
Hamilton said he was dazed after struggling with Red Bull in the pre-season test in the month before Mercedes’ reaction.
“We have worked very hard over the last week to try and understand the package that we have,” he said.
“We took a few steps forward, but we couldn’t compete with that last Lap Max today, but P2 may cause us to Red Bull tomorrow.

“Max did a great lap and about 0.4 seconds is a big difference so we have to do some work. We pushed, but in the end I couldn’t get out of the car.
“Still, it was exciting and I’m proud of everyone.”
