Injured England fast bowler Joffra Archer, who has already been ruled out of the Indian Premier League, will undergo surgery on his right hand on Monday. Archer played in two Test matches and five T20 internationals against India before returning home a few days before the completion of the shortest format. He took four wickets in two Tests and seven wickets in five T20Is. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement on Saturday, “England fast bowler Joffra Archer will return to the UK on Tuesday following a scan and subsequent review of the advisory.”

“He has also received another injection for a right elbow injury which disqualified him for selection for India’s current ODI series.

“The procedure in Jofra’s hand will take place on Monday 29 March so that he can recover during the planned pause following the injection of his elbow.”

Archer had a cut in his hand while cleaning at his home in January, shortly before leaving for India to prepare for the Test series.

The injury was managed by the ECB’s medical team through seizures and had no effect on their availability. However, an expert opinion was sought on further investigation and his return to the UK, and it has been decided in conjunction with the ECB Medical Panel that surgery is the best option to manage his injury over the long term.

The ECB will provide further extension in due time. The 25-year-old Barbados-born fast bowler has played 42 international games for England so far, with 86 wickets in his name.
