Oscar de la Hoya announces his return to boxing on 3 July; No opponent set

Oscar de la Hoya confirmed his return to the boxing ring as a fighter on Friday, and he has a date set.

“July 3, I’m making my comeback,” De La Hoya said during a press conference for the April 17 boxing match between YouTube celebrity Jake Paul and retired MMA fighter Ben Escaren.

He posed no follow-up questions and left Mike literally before exiting the stage with Snoop Dogg and Al Bernstein.

De La Hoya has not struggled since being stopped by Manny Paciao in 2008. He announced his retirement shortly after in 2009 and put on a promoter’s cap with Golden Boy Promotion. But the former six-division world champion has been making a comeback in the ring over the years. He eventually settled on a date to end his 12-year retirement and return to the ring at the age of 48.

There is no opponent or venue for the fight yet, but De La Hoya mentions the choice of Gennady Golovkin as a potential opponent. GGG is the IBF middleweight champion, considering it is unlikely, he has suffered only one defeat and a comeback would be a huge task. It is expected to be a fighter of lower caliber, but De La Hoya said it would be a recognizable name.
