IND vs ENG, 1st ODI: Shikhar Dhawan, debutants help India beat England, lead 1-0 series

Debutants Krunal Pandya and Prisidh Krishna set a big stage to give India an all-round victory with a 66-run win over world champions England in the first ODI of the three-match series on Tuesday. Under-fire opener Shikhar Dhawan delivered with a solid 98, with Krunal (31 not out off 31) making a start to put India on 317 after England’s decision to field. England were chasing ahead of Krishna (4/54) and Shardul Thakur (3), with Jason Roy (46 for 35) and Johnny Bairstow (94 for 55) at 135 for no loss in the 15th over. The 25-year-old Krishna’s figure was bested by an Indian debutant as England’s innings ended at 251 in 42.1 overs.

Considering the nature of the surface, it was a commendable effort by the Indian bowlers, who defended the T20 series to achieve the target with remarkable ease. Krishna, who smashed 37 runs in his first three overs, came back strongly and troubled the batsmen with his ability to generate extra bounce.

Thakur once again succeeded when the team needed and senior supporter Bhuvneshwar Kumar also took a few wickets in the end. England had the game in the bag, but were guilty of throwing it, failing to make it on the opening flight given by Bairstow and Roy.

Earlier, thanks to innings of Krunal (31 not out) and KL Rahul (43 not out), Dhawan and Virat Kohli (56 for 60) shared a 105-run partnership for the second wicket with an unbeaten innings of 112 runs. Sent England on a leather hunt. 57 balls to take the team across 300.

Dhawan hit 11 fours and two sixes in his innings of 106 balls while Krunal hit seven fours and two sixes in his entertaining innings. Rahul was also welcomed after the lean run in the T20 series.

Insert with the bat, Rohit Sharma (28 for 42) and Dhawan shared a 64-run partnership for the opening wicket. Dhawan hit two consecutive fours and a four in the seventh over, while Rohit hit two consecutive fours in the ninth over.

After losing his place in the playing XI for the T20s, Dhawan gained a ‘hook life’ after a formidable run of form when he hooked the fine-leg to get his fourth boundary. India were kept at 64/0 after 15 overs.

However, Rohit soon faltered, with wicketkeeper Jose Butler getting an outside edge off Stokes’ ball. Captain Kohli came with Dhawan and both carried the innings further. Kohli got his first boundary, cover drive off the 17th ball and was in his element as he relied on drive and pull.

Dhawan scored his half-century in the 24th over, off 68 balls, with a slog-sweep and then changed gears. He got another life after Moil Ali hit a four off deep mid-wicket off Adil Rashid. Kohli and Dhawan took Ali and gave India 15 runs in the 29th over. Kohli, who completed his 61st ODI fifty in 50 balls, was dismissed when he was caught by fast bowler Mark Wood (2/75).

India lost their way in the middle overs before Krunal and Rahul became aggressive. Dhawan took Eoin Morgan out at mid-wicket with a wicket. There were several injuries on the field with Shreyas Iyer, Sam Billings and Eoin Morgan.

Both Billings and Morgan returned to bat but Shreyas could not get on the field after dislocating his left shoulder, which also makes him suspect for the IPL starting next month.
