The ‘Sargesheshi’ showroom near the YWCA on Kannur Road in Kozhikode is a symbol of endurance in the face of difficulties.
The handicraft products depicted here are mostly the result of a months-long effort put forth by 15 individuals with Down syndrome and their parents. Mayor Bina Phillip opened the store on International Down Syndrome Day on Sunday.
Sargeshi is a joint venture of the Down Syndrome Trust (DOST), a Kozhikode-based NGO that supports individuals affected by Down syndrome and the ULLS Foundation, the social responsibility of the Urological Labor Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) Is the wing. It is supported by the Sargalaya Arts and Crafts Village in Iringal, where 15 teams were trained in various crafts.
A key feature of the store is that it is managed by three women affected by Down syndrome. He has been trained in UL Care-Nayanar Sadanam-Institute of Vocational Training and Placement for Adults with Intellectual Challenges.
Sargeshi also depicted products made by differently abled people and some other artisans that have Kerala Arts and Crafts Village in Vellar, Sargalaya and Thiruvananthapuram.
Later, the Vice Chancellor of Calicut University MK Jayaraj honored the actors of the film Thiraik Is based on the lives of individuals with Down syndrome.
ULCCS Foundation Director MK Jayaraj said, “Sargeshi is the first girl of its kind in the country who has given a big responsibility to girls with Down syndrome.” Doji founder and president Shaji Thomas John and DoJ support group chairman TJ Nasir Babu were present.
World Down Syndrome Day is observed on 21 March. The 21st day of the third month of the year was chosen to indicate the trisomy (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.
