The Health Department’s decision to extend the compulsory rotatory residential internship by two months to include house surgeons in COVID-19 duty has not gone well with them. This decision was taken in view of the increase in cases.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association opposed the decision and asked the government, health secretary and medical education director to give the internship completion certificate without delay. A release said that the internship was coming to an end on 27 March. By May, it will be extended to affect the preparation of graduate and competitive examinations. In the previous year, House Surgeons performed all tasks including COVID-19 duties.
About 30% of them contracted the infection but the government gave them no relief. Many people became infected again.
It said that the government did not consider his contribution during the epidemic and did not pay him any special salary. The verdict was like rubbing salt in his wounds.
