Total redemption is being done by hand for a tank at Vallasaravakkam near Kesavardhini bus-stop. Zone 11 of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is now restoring it for a month, and a GCC official says the work will be completed in the next two months. The tank found near a temple is now being deepened to 20 feet.
The current storm drains of the tank will give way to large drains, four feet wide and eight feet deep.
Rain water is expected to flow through a major water channel on the Alvarathirunagar Main Road and enter the tank.
In addition, the side wall of the tank will be strengthened. A tiled walkway will also be built around it. The waterbody will have a steel three meter high fence to prevent visitors, especially children, from falling into it. LED lighting and concrete seating is also part of the project. The stairs will be rebuilt. “Once the tank is restored, it will be a new place of leisure for the residents,” V, a resident of Valsaravakkam. Shanmugam says.
The 40 feet deep rain-fed tank is said to have been built a century ago along with the temple. The tank has built select entrances for performing rituals.
Before the restoration work began, the tank was a den of miscreants. It was also misused to dump garbage. In addition, it was overgrown with vegetation.
