UT sends schools by May 31 as cases go up

All schools in the Union Territory of Puducherry (State Board, CBSE and ICSE) will remain closed from Class I to VIII from Monday (March 22) to May 31 in view of the sudden increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

The decision was taken on the basis of the recommendation of the High Level COVID Vaccine Committee headed by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan.

Director of School Education Department PT Rudra Gaur said that for classes 9 to 11, online lessons will be held five days a week from Monday to Friday.

Meanwhile, UT reported 60 new cases and 24 recoveries on Saturday.

New cases, confirmed by testing 1,345 samples, were reported from Puducherry (39), Karaikal (19) and Mahe (two). No cases were seen in Yanam.

The test positivity rate was 4.46%, case fatality rate 1.67% and recovery rate 97.45%.

There were 353 active cases in UT. Of these, 189 were in hospitals and 164 were in isolation.

The toll is 674 deaths, Tally in 40,322 cases and 39,295 patients were recovered.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 vaccination reached 40,522 with 1,096 members of the public, 808 health workers and 384 front-line workers receiving their first dose on Saturday.
