Senior CPI leader CA Kurien dies

Party sources said here that the veteran CPI leader, trade unionist and former Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly CA Kurien died at his residence in Munnar on Saturday.

88-year-old Kurien is survived by three children.

A senior leader of AITUC, CPI’s trade union wing, he represented the Peppermed constituency three times in the state assembly.

Beginning his political life as a trade union activist in 1960, Kurien was jailed for several months for spearheading the movement of plantation workers.

Coming from Puthupalli in Kottayam district, Kurien entered politics after quitting his job in a bank.

Elected to the state assembly in the elections of 1977, 1980 and 1996, Kurien held the chair of the vice-chairman of the state assembly during the period 1996 and 2001.

Condoling the death of Kurien, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the late leader fought for the rights of plantation workers in the state.

The CM also recalled the contribution made to improve the lives of the people living in the hilly district of Idukki.
