Many doctors, engineers and businessmen are contesting this assembly election
Leaving their comfortable offices behind, some candidates are sweating out the street votes and patiently listening to the needs and demands of their voters.
While pursuing his career as a doctor, engineer and businessman, some professionals have taken political advantage in the state. They trust voters, ask for votes with folded hands and make short speeches at corner meetings. Life has never been busy for these professionals.
S.S. Lal, a public health expert, and J. Jacob, an orthopedic surgeon, took the Hippocratic oath decades ago to treat the sick to the best of his abilities. These days, both are ruling it out to win votes.
Dr. Lal, who is the candidate of the United Democratic Front in Kazakhstan, will take over Kadakampally Surendran of the Left Democratic Front and Shobha Surendran of the National Democratic Alliance.
Dr. Jacob is seeking a popular mandate from the Thrikkara constituency in Ernakulam district as an LDF-backed independent candidate. Congress strongman PT Thomas and BJP’s S. His adversaries are his adversaries.

After his career with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, e. Sreedharan took this step and the BJP fielded him from Palakkad. It remains to be seen whether Sreedharan, who leads teams of engineers and technical experts in building bridges and rail networks, will be able to enter politics. Shafi Parambil of UDF and CP Pramod of LDF are his political rivals.
Through his professional life as a police officer, Jacob Thomas had sparked controversies. His service story ‘Sravukkalkoppam Nenthampol‘Many feathers had fallen. He was suspended from service for open criticism of the state government. Although it was expected that he would contest the 2019 parliament elections, his political debut came two years later.
Mr. Thomas, who hailed his appreciation as a “nation builder” for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is an NDA candidate in Irinjalkuda. LDF’s R Bindu and UDF’s Thomas Unnaidan are the other key contestants.
new role
These days, s. Rajasekharan Nair talks to the voters of Neyyattinkara on his favorite subject, the hospitality sector, but about the need for the state to work together.
In his new role as an NDA candidate from the constituency, Mr. Nair is eager to let others know about the constituency plans. S. Selvaraj of UDF and K. of LDF. Ansalan is the other major contestant.
Designing homes, offices and other structures has been his passion. When the LDF approached him with an offer to be the architect of his political campaign in Aluva, Shelena Nishad happily accepted the new assignment.
An architecture graduate, Ms. Nishad has established her office in Ernakulam and was part of the designing team of Kochi Metro. Anwar Sadath of UDF and MN Gopi of BJP are his political rivals in the constituency.
Twenty20, a non-political organization, has also fielded some professionals.
It remains to be seen whether voters will give these professionals a chance to redefine the political narrative of their respective constituencies. Will have to wait till May 2 for a reply.
