The Congress on Thursday rejected Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s “ripped jeans” comment and demanded that he should either apologize for displaying his “anti-women” mentality or resigning.
Party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Mr. Rawat’s remarks. Posting pictures on Twitter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, the organization wore khaki shorts, saying, “Oh my God !!!” His knees are visible. “
On Tuesday, Mr. Rawat made a controversial statement, criticized women for wearing ripped jeans, and wondered what values they would provide to their children.
Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that Mr. Rawat’s remarks are a result of the medieval mentality of the BJP.
“We demand on behalf of the daughters and women of the country that such a Chief Minister should apologize or resign, because this mentality will not work any more. Those who hold 16th century ideas do not have the right to rule India in the 21st century. They have to go now and it is patriotic, ”said Mr. Surjewala, Mr. Modi and Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath and Manohar Lal Khattar have made anti-women comments in the past.
Mr. Surjewala said that Mr. Rawat should be “ashamed” of himself as his job was to provide good governance and not to look at women with such views.
Congress leader Alka Lamba said many BJP and RSS leaders had made similar remarks against women in the past.
“The Congress strongly condemns this kind of thinking towards women. We demand that Prime Minister Modi immediately apologize to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. If you do not do this, you will have to replace it. Otherwise, the women of the country will start a movement and expose the BJP leaders and their mentality, ”Ms. Lamba said ..
“Congress feels that the women of the country have complete freedom to eat, wear or speak as per the constitution. [they] Will not tolerate any such comments. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand must either apologize or resign.
