She emerges as the party’s choice with four consecutive wins in the constituency
Parvoor has always been in favor of the Congress.
But the wind of change swept across the section in no time, as the CPI, the second largest constituent of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), won it five times. It was a family affair for the CPI, when it first launched in 1957, N.W. The seat was won through Sivan Pillai.
On two more occasions, the CPI leader gave his son P.K. Raju won the seat for his party in 1982 and 1987 before handing over the charge to Raju.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Mr. Raju won the seat twice in 1991 and 1996.
Incidentally, it was a youth Congress, VD Sathesan, which was routed by Mr. Raju in the 1996 elections, when the CPI won the seat.
Mr. Satyesan, who witnessed the resurgence of the Congress over the next five years, worked at the ground level to retain the seat.
In what can be regarded as a case of sweet political vengeance, Mr. Sathisan defeated Mr. Raju in 2001. Since then, Mr. Satyesan has not looked back.
Efforts by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to end Congress and Mr. Sathisan’s winning streak were never successful. The CPI’s attempt to win the constituency through one of its popular leaders, Pannian Ravendran, also failed.
In 2011, Mr. Ravindran suffered a defeat as he had 11,349 votes less than his political rival, who had established himself in the constituency by then.
Five years ago, Mr. Sathesan repeated his success story in the constituency, defeating Sarada Mohan, the daughter of senior CPI leader PK Vasudevan Nair.
Mr. Satyesan’s fourth straight victory made a difference to his victory, double that of the 2011 elections. In the last assembly elections, Mr. Satyesan won by a margin of 20,364 votes.
With the phase re-set for a political battle, the Congress high command did not have to think twice before Mr. Satyesan as its candidate in Parvaur, including Chendamangalam, Chittattukara, Ezhikkara, Kottuvalli, Puthenvelikara, Varapuzha and Vadakkara Panchayat Huh.
While there were reports that the CPI (M) might demand Paravur from the CPI, ultimately, it later stayed together. After much deliberation, the CPI has named its local leader, MT Nickson, a trade union leader of AITUC, to take over Mr Satyesan.
In the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the seat went to the BDJS, which fielded the party’s district president AB Jayaprakash.
