MCL graft case: Court curses the government

The Thrissur Vigilance Court on Thursday quashed a government order that removed the names of three former government officials from the list of accused in the Malabar Cements Limited (MCL) bribery case. Now all three, including former Chief Secretary John Mathai, must face trial.

The Government by a special order in 2011, Mr. Mathai and former Managing Director of the company Padmakumar Nair and N. Krishnakumar’s name was removed from the list of accused.

According to the chargesheet, there were three cases of corruption in the procurement of raw materials for cement production, causing major losses to the company.

Death and controversy

On 24 January 2011, the then company secretary of Malabar Cements, Saseendran, with his sons, aged 10 and 8, sparked controversy.

They were found dead inside their house in Kurudikad.

The family alleged that the three were murdered because Sasindran objected to the corrupt conduct in the company.

Ten years later, the corruption case and their deaths are still pending investigation.
