The burqa ban is just a proposal, Sri Lanka says

Public Safety Minister Sarath Verasekera said on Saturday that the full face worn by some Muslim women would be “definitely” banned for cabinet approval, based on national security.

Sri Lanka said on Tuesday that the call to ban the wearing of the burqa was “just a proposal”, going ahead with an important UN vote on human rights in the island nation.

Public Safety Minister Sarath Verasekera said on Saturday that the full face worn by some Muslim women would be “definitely” banned for cabinet approval, based on national security.

But the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that no decision had been taken so far that it had been called “just a proposal … under discussion”.

“The government will initiate comprehensive dialogue with all parties concerned and sufficient time will be taken for necessary consultation and consensus will be reached,” it said in a statement.
