In a bizarre development, NDA’s ally BJP and AIADMK candidates are currently standing in the Nellithop assembly constituency as adversaries and filing nominations for the seat on Monday.
This comes against the backdrop of the NDA agreement, in which 16 seats have been allotted to the AINRC and the BJP has claimed for a large slice of the pie with 14 seats, to be shared with the AIADMK.
Om Sakthi Sekar of AIADMK and his son Tamil Sengolan filed their nominations for Nelithope, while A.K. John Kumar’s son, now with BJP – J. Williams Regan and J. Vivilian Richards also submitted her nomination for the seat.
Meanwhile, on the rival Congress-DMK-Left Front, DMK held V. Karthikeyan was fielded for Nelithop, from where former Chief Minister V.V. Narayanasamy won the by-election. Dr. John Kumar, who was then a Congress MLA. The constituency, had vacated the seat.
Now, Mr. John Kumar is contesting from Kamaraj Nagar, while his sons have filed nominations in Nellithope.
These steps may indicate that Nelithop could be a marker of hard bargaining in negotiations between the BJP and the AIADMK for other constituencies.
According to the ECI schedule, the last date for filing nominations is March 19; March 20 is the deadline for scrutiny and March 22 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
Meanwhile, in the rival Congress-DMK-Left camp, Nelithop has been elected by the DMK which has been allotted 13 to 15 seats for the Congress. The DMK gave V. a new face in Nelithope. Has chosen Karthikeyan.
