News Corp signed Facebook deal for Australian news

The payment deal by a New York-based news business firm followed a similar deal with Google last month

News Corp and Facebook announced new pay deals for the news in Australia on Tuesday, three weeks after the government passed legislation that would help digital giants cover the costs of journalism.

The New York-based news business firm, which operates primarily in the United States, Britain and Australia, said it had reached a multi-year agreement with Facebook that included its major Australian masthead as well as regional publications Are included.

The pay deal followed a similar agreement with Google last month.

In a statement from News Corp Australia, News Corp Australia subsidiary Sky News Australia also reached a new agreement that expands and builds on the existing Facebook agreement.

The deal follows an agreement in 2019 in which News Corp US publications receive payment for access to stories through Facebook News.

“The agreement with Facebook is a milestone in changing the terms of trade for journalism, and will have a content and meaningful impact on our Australian news businesses,” said News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson.

Andrew Hunter said of agreements with News Corp Australia and Sky News Australia, head of Facebook News Partnerships in Australia and New Zealand, “This means that people on Facebook will gain access to premium news articles and News Corp’s national, metropolitan News videos from the network will break, with rural and suburban news rooms Thomson thanking the Australian government for “taking a princely stand for publishers” through its laws, which pay Facebook and Google for news content through its platform May force it to do so, if two gateways to the Internet fail to strike fair deals.

News Corp has now signed deals with Facebook, Google and Apple to provide access to journalism.

Google has become faster than Facebook with Australian news businesses as digital platform laws have made their way through parliamentary procedures.

Seven West Media is the only other major Australian media organization to announce a pay agreement with Facebook.

Facebook announced the initial pay deals with independent news organizations Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media, a day after legislation was passed by Parliament last month.
