Campus Front of India (CFI) activists protested, accusing the Ullal police of committing atrocities on fellow activists involved in the “zero dropout campaign”.
Activists alleged that a group of activists involved in the campaign attacked people addicted to cannabis on Sunday. He said that the police arrested the activists and beat them up at the station. Accusing local police of complicity with cannabis sellers, CFI activists demanded strict action against the culprits.
Commissioner of Police N. Shashi Kumar said that two groups, including CFI activists, were involved in a scuffle after an accident between two motorcycles. A case and counter-case was registered and the accused activists were brought to the police station. He said the sustained injuries of the activists were the result of the scuffle, not the alleged one by the protesters.
However, Mr. Kumar said that Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) Ranjit Kumar Bhandru has been asked to inquire about additional police excesses.
Police said the group accused of assaulting CFI activists was found to be in an inactive state, but tested negative for cannabis use.
