Bill to amend Juvenile Justice Act in Lok Sabha

A Bill to amend the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which seeks to enhance the role of District Magistrate and Additional District Magistrate, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Shashi Tharoor (Congress) introduced the bill on stage but Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani rejected the points raised by her.

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill, 2021, was later introduced by voice vote.

As per the decision of the Cabinet, in each district, the District Magistrate and Additional District Magistrate shall have the power to supervise the functions of the agencies responsible for the implementation of the Act.

The District Child Protection Unit will also function under the District Magistrate.

According to the amendments approved by the Cabinet last month, before becoming a member of the Child Welfare Committee, a background and educational qualification check will be included.
