The YSRCP won the election in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) with a thumping majority on Sunday.
The ruling party won 64 wards out of 49, while in the last term the opposition TDP could win only in 14 wards.
CPI (M) candidate in 50th ward b. Satya Babu emerged victorious, while the CPI lost all six wards contested in an alliance with the TDP. The CPI (M) contested in 22 wards.
The YSRCP leadership will soon announce the names of candidates for the positions of mayor and deputy mayor, elections for which will be held on 18 March.
JSP and BJP candidates were defeated in all wards (41 and 22 respectively). However, JSP managed to finish third in many wards.
In the 15th ward, where only YSRCP and JSP candidates were in the fray, the latter received 3,678 votes, but lost to Belam Durga by a margin of 956 votes.
Kedineni Swetha, TDP’s mayoral candidate and daughter of MP Kesineni Srinivas, won by a majority of 1,783 votes defeating YSRCP’s Kammili Shoba Rajani in the 11th ward.
Eleven of the 14 wards won by the TDP were unreserved while the other three were reserved for B.C.
It was a close competition between TDP and YSRCP in many wards. The opposition party won more than 2,000 votes in just a few wards. The wards where TDP won were 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 23, 26, 28, 32, 45, 52 and 60.
While TDP’s Potluri Shiv Sai Prasad is the oldest to win from the 12th ward, Bhimseti Pravalika of YSRCP is the youngest to win in the third ward.
Two of the elected candidates are in the 20–40 age group, while 39 are in the 41–60 age group. Only three candidates are over 60 years of age.
Jasti Sambasiva Rao, Devineni Aparna, Adapa Seshagiri, Nelibandla Balaswamy, Veeramchinni Lalitha, Bandi Punyasela, Bulla Vijay Kumar, Umadi Venkateswarlu, Avathu Shailaja Reddy are among those elected to the council more than once.
