The Central Region reported on Sunday that there was a sharp increase in fresh cases with 86 tests positive, of which 44 were seen from Thanjavur district.
Two colleges in Tiruchi took measures after testing positive students. Meanwhile, no deaths occurred in the region due to viral infections.
In Thanjavur district, which recorded a sharp increase in the number of cases, 44 people tested positive for COVID-19 which included 36 school students. Meanwhile, Tiruchi registered 15 new cases.
Among the patients who tested positive in Tiruchi were one student each from National College and College of Government Engineering, Srirangam.
College officials at the National College decided to close the campus and take sanitation measures by Wednesday. College principal R. Sundaraman said that the student’s classmates were asked to take the test before returning to the institution.
At Government Engineering College, Srirangam, 253 test specimens were removed from contacts of the infected student and sent for processing.
In Thiruvarur, 10 patients reported positive, while seven in Nagapattinam. Four fresh cases were reported in Karur, three in Pudukottai and two in Ariyalur. Perambalur registered a fresh case.
