Of the 1015 licensee guns, 961 have been surrendered along with police stations with relevant jurisdiction, while the remaining 54 weapons were being used by the authorities.
In compliance with the Election Commission guidelines in view of the General Elections to the Legislative Assembly on 6 April, the District Police has prepared and implemented a comprehensive plan.
In a review meeting chaired by Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Murugan on Sunday, DIG of Police, Muthusamy, Superintendent of Police Ravali Priya and others said police’s help was taken to handle the elections in a peaceful manner.
Officers said that three companies of central forces had arrived in the district. On the basis of the assessment, flag marches were organized at 18 locations, which were considered sensitive. 138 anti-social elements holding criminal records pledged before the RDO that they would conduct themselves according to the laws and not indulge in any violation during the election process.
Similarly, officials said that since January, seven people had been detained under the Gunda Act. The 11 check-posts at various places in the district were under surveillance and investigation round the clock. So far, 312 cases in the district were registered for election violations. There were 72 flying squads. Recently, the Natham police booked a man accused of making a native gun in Palanipatti.
