India Women vs South Africa Women: Bowlers need to work on preparation before the series, says Mithali Raj

Mithali Raj, captain of the Indian women’s ODI team, said on Sunday that her bowlers did not have the right kind of preparation before entering the five-match series against South Africa. Viewers chased a target of 267 at the loss of seven wickets, claiming an unbeatable lead of 3–1 in the five-match series. “Even if we score more than 266 runs, it will not be enough. Our bowling department will have to work for preparation before the way the South African batsmen have batted,” Mithali said in the presentation ceremony.

“We are not a bad fielding side but there are things we can improve on,” he said.

Veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami missed the match due to a nozzle and India struggled in his absence.

Mithali said, “We missed the experience of Jhulan but it was an opportunity for other bowlers to step up and take responsibility. Our department is experienced. I look forward to a stronger comeback from them.”

South Africa captain Laura Volvard, who set the tone for the opening wicket of 116 with Lijel Lee, called it a “massive team effort”.

“I’m new to the job and I used senior players for advice and help. The plan was to attack as soon as the ball was up. We could have a world-class attack. One in the top four. Batting for us. It’s something we haven’t done in the past.

Mignon du Preez was adjudged Player of the Match for 61 off 55 balls, while sharing a crucial 103-run partnership for the third wicket with Lara Goodall (59 not out) with whom he shared the award.

“I’m sharing this with Lara Goodall. She deserves it too.”

“I am one of the experienced players, who have been in the line-up for a long time and I feel that sometimes I do not always convert my start.

“Laura and Liesel set up the team, so everyone can play with freedom. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time: to contribute in the middle.

“This is a special one. Winning a series in India, in these difficult conditions, and with everything happening in the world, we’re going to cherish this one,” Preez said.
