Director SP Jananathan passed away

Director SP Jananathan died in the city on Sunday morning. He was 61 years old and hospitalized a few days ago.

For his debut Iyarkai Starring Sham, Radhika and Arun Vijay, the acclaimed filmmaker received the National Award for Best Tamil Feature Film.

He directed films directly I Starring Jeeva and Prize Starring Jayam Ravi. His films were known for their strong social commentary and diverse themes. His last release as a filmmaker was a critically acclaimed film. Purampakku Angira Podhuvudamai Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Arya in 2015.

Especially his films E, Peranmai and Purampakku Angira Podhuvudai, Reflected his belief in communism. He believed in direct communication of his political ideas in his films rather than using indirect narrative techniques to make his point. One of the most popular scenes he wrote was Prize Where Nayak, a young tribal forest officer, teaches young urban women about the Marxist view of how to benefit from human labor. He was also thrilled with Tamil history and culture. in Purambokay Angira Podhuvudai, The protagonist on death row says that a ‘Tamil nation’ would not be possible if it did not take into account class contradictions.

Mr. Jananathan was working after producing his upcoming film Labum Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan which was set for release soon.

Condolences have been posted on social media from members of the Tamil film fraternity. Cinematographer PC Sriram said on Twitter that Mr. Jananathan’s films will always be remembered as it reflects his faith in society. Actress Shruti Haasan, who acted in her upcoming film, thanked her for her intelligence and kind words. Director Mohan Raja said that the filmmakers were an inspiration to many including him.
