Defeat to fight anti-Bengal forces in Nandigram as a tribute to martyrs: Mamta

TMC celebrated March 14 as ‘Nandigram Day’ to honor the 14 people killed in the police firing.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday paid tribute to the agitators killed in the 2007 police firing in Nandigram and said they have chosen to fight “anti-Bengal forces” in the constituency as a mark of respect for the martyrs.

Ms. Banerjee, who has been pitted against former lieutenant and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram seat, said the farmers are the pride of West Bengal and the state government is working tirelessly for their development.

“On this day, innocent villagers were killed in a shootout in #Nandigram in 2007. Not many bodies were found. This was a dark chapter in the history of the state. A heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives.” Banerjee tweeted.

The TMC celebrated March 14 as ‘Nandigram Day’, honoring 14 people who were killed in police firing on this day during the anti-land acquisition in 2007. The incident sparked a national outrage and the Calcutta High Court had filed a lawsuit motu ordered a CBI inquiry.

“In memory of those who lost their lives in #Nandigram, we see March 14 every year as #Krishak Day and give #Krishnaratna Awards. Farmers are our pride and our government is working for their all-round development is.” One more twitter post.

Ms. Banerjee said that it is an honor for her to work with the families of the martyrs in Nandigram.

“As an honor and encouragement by my brothers and sisters from Nandigram, I am contesting #Bangaliens2021 as @AITCofficial candidate from this historic place. Staying here and working with members of martyred families against Bengal I have great respect. Forces, “she said.

Ms. Banerjee, then the opposition TMC leader, had launched a movement against the acquisition of arable land for industrialization in Nandigram and Singur by the Left Front government.

His party reaped rich dividends from the movement, winning 50% of the panchayat seats in 2008, winning 19 Lok Sabha seats in 2009 and ending the 34-year-long Left Front rule in the state in 2011.

The elections to the 294-member assembly will be held in eight phases from 27 March to 29 April. The results will be announced on 2 May.
