Common bicycle system is rolled out in Kochi

More than 200 riders, including children, seniors and bicycle enthusiasts, organized the first ride as part of the launch of 360 bicycles, part of the MYBYK Public Bike Sharing (PBS) system, which would see a total of 1,000. The bicycle was launched in Greater Kochi area here on Saturday.

The bicycles were flagged off from the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium metro station in the presence of KMRL managing director Alkesh Kumar Sharma on Saturday, under a joint initiative of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KRML) and Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML). District Collector S. Suhas, District Police Chief (Kochi City) CH Nagaraju, CSML General Manager Rajeev R., and MYBYK founder and CEO Arijit Soni.

The event featured the logo and jersey of KMRL’s cycling club launched by Mr. Suhas, followed by the MYBYK app by Mr. Nagaraju.

Now passengers will be able to hire bicycles from the docking station available with them and travel to the nearest metro station to board the metro. If necessary, they can hire a bicycle again to reach their destination.

KMRL and CSML provided the funding of the project, with Ahmedabad-headquartered public bicycle sharing operator MYBYK in charge of the operation and maintenance of cycles operating at 60 terminals located approximately 500 meters from each other. Official sources said that currently, 35 hubs where bicycles will be cycled include 21 metro stations (from Aluva to Petta) and prominent locations include Pampampili Nagar, MG Road and Cochin University of Science and Technology.
