India, after being dismissed as the Twenty20 International (T20I) series openers in Ahmedabad, will fight back in the five-match series as they face England in the second T20I at the same venue on Sunday. India went into the first T20I with six bowling options, but their batsmen were blown away by the England batsmen on Friday. Jofra Archer took three wickets, while Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and Chris Jordan took one wicket each.
Apart from Shreyas Iyer, every other Indian batsman struggled for a period of time, but a major concern for the hosts in the second T20 will be the form of captain Virat Kohli.
Kohli was dismissed for four runs off four balls by Adil Rashid after Ben Stokes sent his account open without opening his account in the fourth Test earlier this month and it was the second consecutive score of zero in international cricket.
India rested Rohit Sharma in the first game, but both KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan failed to dismiss the openers as India recorded their worst powerplay score – 22 out of three.
Iyer fought a lone battle, as he scored his third T20I half-century. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya hit some fours but even they scored at a strike rate of less than 100.
Despite having six bowling options, the Indian bowlers looked less powerful than their English counterparts on the surface of Ahmedabad.
Axar Patel, who took a wicket for entertainment in the Test series, was bowled clean by the England batsmen. He conceded 24 runs in just three overs without taking any wickets.
Yuzvendra Chahal succeeded in removing Jose Butler but proved to be a bit expensive in his four-over spell, scoring 44 runs.
For England, Jason Roy and Butler made a solid 72-run debut, setting the stage for a comfortable win.
Johnny Bairstow, who was struggling for form in the Test series, took an attacking stance and regained his rhythm as he remained unbeaten on 26 for 17.
Batting shoulder-to-shoulder with Jasprit Bumrah out and T Natarajan, India can change their bowling lineup by opting for more attacking options in Kuldeep Yadav.
