Greek world number five Stephanos Tsitipas saw his hopes of a third consecutive Marseille ATP title by 93rd-ranked Pierre-Hughes Herbert in the quarter-finals on Friday. Herbert, known as a doubles specialist, trailed past Australian Open semi-finalist Tsitsipas 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-2. The 29-year-old will face fellow Frenchman Yugo Humbert in the next round, who outscored compatriot Arthur Rindernech 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4). “It’s unbelievable, it’s my first win against a top-five player,” Herbert said. “I knew I would have to play a great match to win and that’s what I did.”

Top seed Daniel Medvedev, who will replace Rafael Nadal on Monday as the world’s number two player, won 6–2, 6–4 against 19-year-old Italian Janik Sinar.

Medvedev, who has nine career titles, falls through his first semi-finals in Marseille, falling to the quarter-finals in 2017 and 2020.

“Jannik always tries to hit the ball as hard as he can,” Medvedev told atptour.com.

“You can’t give him an easy ball, otherwise you’re going to run all over the place and he’s probably going to hit a winner.”

On Saturday, Medvedev will face Australian qualifier Mattev Abden for a spot in the final.

World number 287 Ebden defeated 2018 champion Karen Khachanov of Russia 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
