Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa and Health and Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar received his first dose of vaccination at the Government Victoria Hospital on Friday.
Both took India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine Kovaxin, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech. On Thursday, covaxin was removed from clinical trial mode and is now authorized for emergency use on par with Covishield of Oxford-AstraZeneca.
Speaking after taking the job, Mr. Sudhakar appealed to all senior citizens and eligible persons to register and get vaccinated as soon as possible. The minister, who is himself a doctor, was included in the category of frontline workers.
The state health department has now started using kovaxine in more session sites across the state. Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Javed Akhtar told Hindu Kovaxin has been sent to vaccination centers across the state, including Bangalore, with more sessions.
“We are also providing both vaccines at six institutions in Davanagere, Shivamogga, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru, where only kovaxine was given. We are enhancing the vaccination program. The total number of vaccinations reached 1.12 lakh on Friday. Vaccination times have been made flexible and private hospitals can go up to 10 pm.
Meanwhile, total vaccinations in Karnataka stood at 12,70,782 as of 5.30 pm on Friday. This includes 2,75,301 seniors above the age of 45 with co-morbidity and 50,343 persons who have been vaccinated since March 1.
On Friday, 57,885 seniors above the age of 45 with co-morbidities and 12,055 worked fiercely till 5.30 pm, with Bengaluru Urban registering the highest numbers in these categories – 1,08,036 and 15,979 respectively.
A total of 4,78,541 healthcare workers and 1,73,309 frontline workers have taken the first dose of vaccination so far.
2,80,358 healthcare workers have taken the second dose.
