Worker killed, 8 injured during railway work

A 20-year-old laborer was killed and eight others injured after falling from a height while repairing railway lines in East Delhi’s Shakarpur on Wednesday night.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Deepak Yadav said that the deceased has been identified as Shahzad, a resident of Alwar.

Iron mesh slipped

Police said the incident occurred at 11.45 am on Wednesday and they were informed by the hospital at around 1 pm on Thursday. “The laborers were standing on an iron grill and doing repair work. The iron mesh slipped and they fell with him. They fell from a height of about 15-20 feet, ”said a senior police officer.

All the injured persons were taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital and Jagpravesh Chandra Hospital where Shahzad was declared dead. Other people are currently undergoing treatment.

The injured have been identified as Sohib (20), Kalibhavan (22), Sudhir (38), Raghubir (22), Sonu (20), Golu (20), Anees Khan (20) and Imran (21).

Police said a case was registered against the contractor under section 287 (careless conduct in relation to machinery), 337 (life-threatening or injury to personal safety), 304A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Has gone and further investigation is underway.

One laborer, who did not wish to be identified, said that workers were not given safety gear.
