Mumbai’s former captain Prithvi Shaw smashed 165 off 122 balls to give his team an easy 72-run victory over Karnataka in the semi-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Thursday. Mumbai will take on Uttar Pradesh in the final at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday. In the other semi-finals, UP defeated Gujarat by five wickets. Due to Shaw’s talent, Mumbai posted 322 before batting on the Airforce ground, and before bowling to the opposition for 250, their bowlers performed brilliantly.
It was Shaw’s performance in every way, as he did with a veteran Karnataka attack, and worked with 17 fours and seven maximums to register his fourth century of the tournament.
Shaw had earlier scored three tons, including a double against Delhi – 105 not out, 227 against Puducherry and an unbeaten 185 against Saurashtra. He has scored 754 runs in the tournament so far – the most in a single edition of the National ODI Championship.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) fell early with Mumbai on 11/1 in the morning. But Shaw batted aggressively and did not spare any bowler as even wicketkeeper Aditya Tare (16) played another role for his partner at the other end. Shaw and Tara led the innings and shared a 71-run partnership for the second wicket.
Leggie Shreyas Gopal (1/82) broke the partnership after catching the star. However, the dim right hand continued to play his shots. He completed his half-century in 48 balls and then played his second consecutive innings in 79 balls. He found a capable ally in all-rounder Shams Mulani (45; 4×4), who played his role to perfection. Both added 159 runs for the third wicket, with Shaw being more aggressive.
Mumbai took the team’s score to 200 runs in 34.1 overs. Shaw, who now holds the record for the highest individual score in the tournament and the highest score by an Indian in List A Chase, continued to submit the attack and completed his 150 off 111 balls.
Karnataka overtook Mumbai by dismissing both set batsmen in quick succession as they slipped to 243/4. Aman Khan (25), Shivam Dubey (27) started, but failed to convert as Karnataka bowlers, pacer V. Under the leadership of Vaishak (4/56), Mumbai gained momentum in the middle and lower order. Chasing 323, Karnataka lost captain R Samarth (8).
Then Devdutt Padikkal (64) and Siddharth KV (8) tried to build the innings with a 68-run stand, but 22-year-old off-spinner Tanush Kotian (2/23) gave Karnataka a double whammy. Shock by dismissing Siddharth and skipper Manish Pandey.
Leg-spinner Prashant Solanki (2/61) topped Mumbai after dismissing a dangerous Paddikkal, who was unlucky and had hit nine fours and a six by then. Karnataka was at 97/4 at the time. Left-arm spinner Shams Mulani (2/47) got the better of Karun Nair (29), while Karnataka lost their half for 134 runs, while Yashasvi was played at 152-6 to play better than Shreyas Gopal. Had to leave.
